Rural Backyard Piggery Yojana
Rural Backyard Piggery Yojana has been started by the Chief Minister of Meghalaya to make the farmers self-dependent. Under this scheme, farmers will be provided assistance in animal husbandry especially in breeding and rearing of pigs. This will help the farmers to sustain the animal husbandry economically. With this scheme farmers will be able to earn a sustainable existence through various activities related to livestock. The scheme will also ensure the prosperity of low-income households through livestock interventions, thereby promoting pig farming in the state.
Phase of Meghalaya Rural Backyard Piggery Yojana
- This livestock intervention includes pig farming, poultry farming, and more. Rs 15.18 crore has been allocated by the government to Phase 1 of the scheme, and as part of this programme, 6000 people will get four high-yielding improved types of pigs.
- An additional Rs 25 crore will be spent in the second phase of the scheme. The project provides zero interest loan for fattening and pig breeding.
- In the initial stages of the scheme, it has revived the appreciation of a small number of farmers. Meghalaya procures 18,000 metric tonnes of pork from other states. The state plans to mitigate the shortage in the supply of pork through a strategy that includes raising pigs and all measures taken to do so.
