National Food Security Mission Scheme Key aspects
This year, a target has been set to produce food grains in 77 lakh hectare area during monsoon, of which 11.73 lakh hectare has been sown. There is a demand of 6 lakh quintal seeds for sowing in the state and 7.74 lakh tonnes of seeds are available with the state. The total demand for fertilizers between April and June was 12.78 lakh tonnes, of which 8.02 lakh metric tonnes were supplied.
In the year 2020-21, food grains were produced in 153.08 lakh hectares which is 2 percent more than the national average of the country, while in Karnataka it is 10 percent more than the state average. This production of food grains has happened despite the ongoing lockdown and weak economy to prevent infection of Covid-19 and all the credit goes to the farmers.

Last year oilseeds were sown in 208.2 lakh hectares during Kharif season and 8 million hectares in Rabi (winter) season. Now the special Kharif program is likely to bring an additional area of 6.37 lakh hectares under oilseeds.
It is set to produce 120.26 lakh quintal oilseeds and 24.36 lakh quintal edible oil. After consultation with the State Governments, a scheme has been prepared to distribute soybean and groundnut seed grains free of cost to the farmers under the National Food Security Mission (Oilseeds and Palm Oil).
